One person is in custody after a car drove up to a White House checkpoint yesterday night, the US Secret Service has said.
Security at the White House was immediately upgraded. The driver was allegedly carrying a bomb. The vehicle has been declared suspicious and nearby streets have been closed off.
US President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida at the time of the incident.
The Secret Service, which handles White House security, said the driver had approached a "checkpoint located at 15th Street and E Street NW.
The individual has been detained by officers. The episode was the second scare to hit the White House yesterday, after a person earlier jumped over a bike rack in a buffer zone in front of the residence.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has told China's President Xi Jinping that President Donald Trump looks forward to visiting his country, and to enhancing understanding between the states.
Tillerson met the Chinese leader in Beijing's Great Hall of the People, as his East Asian tour comes to an end. Xi said he was glad to see good progress from Tillerson's meetings. Xi added that he had spoken to the US president several times.
Tillerson said Trump places a "very high value on the communications that have already occurred". There was no mention of contentious issues like North Korea's missile and nuclear programmes, or the status of Taiwan, which China claims as its own.
The meeting came as North Korea's military tested a new high-thrust engine, according to reports from Pyongyang's state news agency.
